Everything we know about the Galaxy Note 20

Samsung is holding a virtual event on August 5, where it's expected to unveil its next major addition to its smartphone lineup: the Galaxy Note 20. Alongside it, however, there are rumors that we might see anything from new earbuds to wearables and even foldables.

Galaxy Note 20 leaks & rumors

Leaks show that the Galaxy Note 20 will have a design similar to the Galaxy S20 or Galaxy S20 Ultra. Galaxy Note 20 will have a rectangular camera array unlike the vertical arrangement employed by the Note 10 series. Its also rumored that the physical keys will be re-positioned on the right side of the phone.

Galaxy Note 20 will come in two variants: a standard Note 20 which will reportedly have a flat 6.7-inch 60 Hz 2345 x 1084 display as well as a bigger Note 20 Ultra which will have a curved 6.9-inch 120 Hz 3200 x 1440 display. It is also rumored that the Galaxy Note 20 will have a glass-looking plastic back. If that happens then the Galaxy Note 20 should have a significant price difference as compared to the Ultra.

The Note 20 Ultra will have a 4500 mah battery while the Note 20 will have a slightly smaller 4300 mah battery. Both devices will ship with 25W chargers in the box which will give about 50% of charge in just 20 minutes. Both the devices will have wireless charging and reverse charging as well. It is rumored that the Note 20 series will have Qualcomm's 3D Sonic Max fingerprint scanner which is 17x larger and allows for 2 finger authentication.

Galaxy Note 20 Ultra will have a 108 MP f/1.8 primary lens with optical image stabilization. It will be capable of shooting 8K videos at 30 fps. It will also have laser auto-focus which should improve the auto-focus issues as seen with the Galaxy S20 Ultra. The secondary camera will be a 12 MP f/2.2 ultra-wide camera. And finally, there will be a 12 MP f/3.0 periscope zoom camera with 5x optical zoom and 50x space zoom.

Whereas the Galaxy Note 20 will have a camera setup more similar to the Galaxy S20. It will have a 12 MP f/1.8 primary camera. A 12 MP f/2.2 ultra-wide camera and a 64 MP telephoto camera with 3x optical and 30x digital zoom.

The Note 20 could also pack an in-screen front-facing camera, which would sit under the full display instead of within a notch or punch-hole, industry sources told South Korean tech site The Elec - a claim backed up by a tweet from notable leaker @UniverseIce.

The Galaxy Note 20 series will be mainly powered by the Exynos 990 with an exception in a few regions where it will get the Snapdragon 865+. And in that case, it is rumored that the Note 20 will have the Snapdragon 865 whereas the Note 20 Ultra will have the Snapdragon 865+. This will create a significant performance difference because the Exynos 990 is already less powerful than the Snapdragon 865. So, powering one version of the same device with the lesser SoC and another with a significantly powerful SoC will surely create some controversy.

Another thing to note is that in regions where the Galaxy Note 20 series will be powered by Snapdragon SoC, the Note 20 will still get the older chipset as compared to the Ultra. This downgrade along with other downgrades like the FHD+ 60 Hz panel and plastic back will make the regular Note 20 more of a lite version of the Note 20 Ultra. Unlike the S20 lineup, where the S20 Ultra was overly equipped and the regular S20 and S20+ were their own devices.

The Galaxy Note 20 Ultra will have 12 GB of RAM as compared to 8 GB on the standard Note 20. Both devices will come with 256 GB of storage. Though, you can upgrade to 512 GB on the Ultra model. Another difference between the devices is that the Note 20 Ultra gets expandable storage whereas there is no microSD expansion on the Note 20.

On the Note 20 Ultra, S pen latency is down to 9 ms for very smooth and realistic writing (and doodling) experience. On the Note 20, the latency is at 26 ms but that is still very fast for a good S pen experience.

Wireless Dex is rumored to make a debut with the Note 20 series. It is also rumored that the Note 20 will have support for Microsoft's Project xCloud which will allow you to stream high quality games on the device.

The Note 20 Ultra is expected to come at $1,200 while the Note 20 is expected to come at about $1,000. Though, $1,000 for the Note 20 with all the rumors so far is not a good price provided all the cutbacks and shortcomings. Though, nothing much can be said before the launch of the devices. Stay tuned for updates.
