OnePlus Nord Launched! Initial Impressions And Quick Run Down Of All Its Features

OnePlus unveiled the OnePlus Nord with the world's first Augmented Reality launch event which was very cool itself. OnePlus' prices have increased with every iteration and have gotten out of hand. Its not just OnePlus though, smartphone prices have crossed well above the $1,000 mark for some time now which has led to a significant increase in importance of the mid-range market with brands like Apple reviving the iPhone SE and Samsung producing huge numbers with its mid-range A-series smartphones.

But OnePlus started this trend of offering high-end performance and features for a reasonable and affordable price. Back then, OnePlus didn't have a strong presence and appeal. So, with the OnePlus Nord, OnePlus is aiming to go back to its roots and is trying to reach as many people as they can.

For a $500 phone, the OnePlus Nord actually has "pretty much everything you could ask for."
So, let's get the numbers out of the way.

The OnePlus Nord comes with Qualcomm Snapdragon 765 G which sits below the Snapdragon 865. Still, it should be powerful enough to handle all the tasks with ease and ensure the smooth and snappy experience that OnePlus is aiming for with the OnePlus Nord. It also comes with 5G which at this price point is a bargain and we expect to see this trend of mid-range 5G phones throughout the year. The Nord also comes with a 4100mAh battery, so it should last a day between charges. Though, OnePlus hasn't given any numbers regarding the battery life.

The phone comes in 3 configurations: 6/64, 8/128 and a whopping 12/256 device models. Though, 6/64 configuration is for Indian market only. The 8/128 configuration would be ideal for most people.

    Let's talk cameras!
The OnePlus has a quad-camera setup on the back.

The 48 MP Sony IMX586 is the same as in the OnePlus 8 from a couple of months ago. The OnePlus 8 camera was no champ but at this price point, it could be good. A notably low f/1.75 aperture and optical image stabilization could help the OnePlus Nord compete well against its rivals.

Other than that, OnePlus Nord is equipped with an 8 MP ultra wide camera for those good looking wide shots, a 5 MP depth camera for portrait photos and finally a 2 MP macro camera for close up shots. Overall, the camera system on the OnePlus Nord is quite diverse. On the front, it has two cameras i.e. a 32 MP main sensor and an ultra wide camera for group selfies.

Video-wise, you can capture 4K video at up to 30 fps; 1080p video at up to 60 fps; and a super slow-motion mode at the same resolution, with a framerate of 240 fps. In short, Nord has most of the video features you’d expect to find.

On to the design side, the OnePlus Nord looks like a flagship device. There’s no big chin and nothing, really, to complain about. The bezel around the Nord’s screen is about as thin as that found on the iPhone 11 series.

The OnePlus Nord has a 6.44-inch AMOLED screen which runs at 90 Hz which can run at 90Hz, making for a smoother viewing experience than most smartphones that have 60Hz screens. You can also adjust the screen setting to 60Hz if you’re looking to conserve battery life. It has an in-display fingerprint sensor just like the one on the OnePlus 8.

The OnePlus Nord comes in 2 colors: blue marble and gray onyx.

Even though, the OnePlus Nord makes some compromises in some areas but overall it checks out most of the boxes. It has "pretty much everything you could ask for". Things like performance, battery life and cameras will have to wait for a full review. But on paper, its a solid device for the price and an appreciable addition to OnePlus lineup.
