Snapdragon 865 Plus is the first Qualcomm SoC to break the 3 GHz clock speed barrier

The Snapdragon 865 is undoubtedly the most impressive processor for Android phones right now, owing to its all-around power, bundled 5G modem, and expansive multimedia capabilities. The company thinks it can offer something a little better for the second half of the year, as they announced the new Snapdragon 865 Plus, which is aimed at offering a performance boost for phones released between now and the beginning of 2021.

Qualcomm has done the same for previous-generation chips, too. As we saw with the Snapdragon 855 Plus in 2019 and the Snapdragon 821 back in 2016, the Snapdragon 865 Plus delivers improved speeds for the Prime CPU core and for the Adreno 650 GPU. The Prime CPU core now sees a leap from 2.84GHz to 3.1GHz, breaking the 3GHz barrier in the process. The other CPU cores don’t see any changes though. The Adreno 650 GPU offers 10 percent faster graphics rendering.

It has newly added compatibility for Qualcomm’s FastConnect 6900 connectivity suite, which the company says supports Wi-Fi speeds up to 3.6Gbps. Moreover, you’ve got Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.2 instead of Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.1 on the vanilla flagship silicon thanks to the Qualcomm's FastConnect 6900 connectivity suite.

Like the regular Snapdragon 865, the Snapdragon 865 Plus features Qualcomm’s Hexagon 698 with Hexagon Vector Extensions and Hexagon Tensor Accelerator, 5th-generation AI Engine, Dual 14-bit Spectra 480 ISP, Snapdragon X55 5G modem-RF system, Qualcomm Quick Charge 4+ charging technology, and more. It’s produced on TSMC’s second-generation 7nm DUV (N7P) process.

Asus and Lenovo have both confirmed that they’ll be among the first brands to support the new SoC, in the form of the ROG Phone 3 and the rumored Legion Gaming Phone. But it may not be the best choice for all phone manufacturers, which may want to emphasize battery life over raw performance. Considering that, it’s likely that many new flagship devices will continue to feature the standard Snapdragon 865 because the Snapdragon 865 plus is technically just an overclocked version of the original Snapdragon 865.
