All the new iOS 14 features announced at the WWDC 2020

Due to the pandemic, Apple's Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) was held virtually but that didn’t stop Apple from dropping major announcements. Here’s everything new with iOS 14.

  • App Library, these are folders, on the home screen, that your iPhone creates automatically for grouping together apps by category, including recently added apps and suggestions.
  • Now, you can add widgets to your home screen. The redesigned widgets are available in multiple sizes, and a new “smart stack” lets you put multiple widgets in one, swipeable space.

  • App Clips, these are essentially Apple's version of Android Instant Apps. Basically, it lets you use a smaller, lighter version of an app when you need to use one specific feature, rather than the full app.

  • Siri is getting a new user interface and advanced translation features.

  • You can now pin important conversations in messages. You now also have the ability to mention someone specifically and reply to particular messages in group texts in Messages.

  • Maps includes a new cycling-specific navigation, among other things. It can alert you to increases in elevation as well as a notification if you’ll need to carry it up stairs to get where you’re going. Additionally, it will get a view that lets EV drivers know where chargers are along their routes.

  • Memoji received new customization options including more age options, accessories, like face masks, and emotions, like blushing.

  • CarKey, a feature that uses NFC technology to unlock and start your vehicle, is finally going to arrive with iOS 14. It pairs a vehicle to an iPhone or Apple Watch, and allows users to share their key digitally with family and friends.

  • Like iPadOS and MacOS, iOS 14 now lets users have picture-in-picture video on their home screen. You can also minimize the PiP into a small button on the side of the screen if you need the whole screen but don't want to close the video.

Stay tuned to learn about other major announcements from the WWDC 2020!
